Vets FIRST is a specialized program for U.S. veterans committed to overcoming substance use challenges. Funded by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), this program is available to any veterans that were NOT Dishonorably Discharged. Eligibility for Vets FIRST is determined through an interview process with FIRST’s Veterans Case Manager and we encourage veterans to register with the Asheville Veterans Administration Center.
As part of the program, FIRST collaborates with the Asheville Veterans Service Office (VSO) to assist veterans in addressing discharge status issues. The Asheville VSO provides guidance and resources to help veterans apply for discharge upgrades and service-connected benefits, ensuring they can access the support they need for a successful recovery journey.
Vets FIRST is designed to support veterans in their recovery journey by providing tailored resources, employment assistance, and structured living arrangements. The program emphasizes personal growth and community reintegration, helping veterans rebuild their lives while maintaining sobriety.
Upon completing Phase One, Vets FIRST participants actively engage in a job search using FIRST’s established resources and community partnerships. Veterans are encouraged to seek employment that aligns with their recovery goals or return to school for further education. For those with service-connected disabilities who cannot work, FIRST facilitates connections with volunteer organizations where veterans can apply their skills and develop new ones, fostering a sense of purpose and contribution.
Once Vets FIRST clients secure stable employment or volunteer roles, they are eligible to transition into the Veteran Cottages—specialized transitional living spaces located on the FIRST campus. With living expenses covered by the facility, veterans can focus on their recovery and personal development in a supportive, stable environment that promotes self-sufficiency and independence.
Graduation from the Veterans program requires the successful completion of a 12-month curriculum that includes all assigned tasks and clinical activities outlined by the program’s staff. This curriculum is designed to address the unique challenges veterans face during recovery, fostering emotional resilience and practical coping strategies.
Similarly to the Long-Term Program, Vets FIRST clients must actively participate in all required clinical sessions and 12-Step programs, including evenings and weekends. Regular involvement in 12-Step meetings, such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Narcotics Anonymous (NA), or other support groups, reinforces their sobriety and sense of community. The combination of clinical curriculum and peer support ensures a holistic approach to recovery, setting the stage for long-term success.
As one of only a few programs nationwide offering integrated substance use treatment, job placement assistance, and transitional housing, Vets FIRST provides a comprehensive approach to recovery for homeless veterans, fostering long-term stability and personal growth.
